Book Review: 49Crushes by Valentine Makoni
"Happiness is the people who love us and what's good for us and who never tell us. Like me, loving you and wishing you all the happiness i know doesn't exist."
- 49Crushes
The act of confessing romantic feelings is a not an easy one, now imagine doing it 49times, in public. That is what Valentine Makoni did, and that is what 49Crushes is about. What began as a brazen #WCW dedication turned into an impressive celebration and exploration of love and romance.
This is an amazing collection of #WCW dedications to 49 totally different girls from different places and the feeling of attachment they leave the author with. A crush, we call it but there is much more to this book than a few fleeting moments of frivolous desire, it is about the journey he takes from Lolwethu to RJ. It is about the awkward truths he admits with each beautifully crafted love poem and each relatable story of how they met. The author also makes reference to the Zimbabwean economic enviroment, which is a plus. Above all, i keep re-reading this book because it is about conveying the message that love, is meant to be expressed, boldly and eloquently.
To be honest this book makes me wish i was a wine-drinker, so if you are one read this with a glass of wine. Read it if you are looking for the right words with which to approach your crush, read it if you don't know if you should approach your crush, read it if you have a crush, read it if you don't and also read it just because!
Keep in mind:
"A man who hangs around a beautiful woman without saying anything will end up fetching water at her wedding" -African Proverb
